Supplies for Natural Dyeing and Flower Printing

Dharma Trading Company: This place has been around for decades and carries just about everything related to all types of dyeing. I particularly like to shop here for:

  • Mordants and cleaning agents including alum and soda ash

  • Blank dyeable items and fabric

Botanical Colors: Dedicated to natural dyeing, look here for raw dye goods as well as assisting agents to use in the dye process

  • Raw dye materials such as dried flowers and fruit tree cuttings

  • Mordants and assisting agents including alum and soda ash

  • Dyeable fabrics

Bloom and Dye

  • Dried flowers for dyeing

Grand Prismatic Seed

  • Seeds for growing dye plants

Mountain Rose Herbs and Starwest Botanicals: Herb suppliers can be a good place to find dye ingredients that are otherwise hard to find, such as wild cherry bark and black walnut hulls.

the Local Nursery:

One of my favorite aspects of dyeing is growing the plants! Support your local nursery, and pollinators, by starting a dye garden. By the way, here are 10 Reasons to Grow a Dye Garden, a PDF I created for my email subscribers a while back, join here if you like.

Thrift Shops:

Buying equipment for a new hobby doesn’t have to be expensive. Find used stainless pots, enamelware, glass and ceramic bowls, tongs, spoons, measuring cups . . . dented and mismatching is fine, but stay away from rusty items unless you want iron for special effects!

Marigolds, a dye plant for natural dyeing and printing, freshly harvested from the dye garden.

Here are some of the places I go for equipment, ingredients and supplies for natural dyeing and flower printing.
